MEET OUR DOCTORS
Our doctor’s involvement in the veterinary field is heartfelt and
longheld, with over 30 years combined experience working in the
veterinary community. They are both very proud and honored to
be a part of the West End Veterinary Office team.


Doctor Don Factor is a 1983 graduate of the New York State College of Veterinary
Medicine at Cornell University. He is an active member of the American Veterinary
Medical Association, the New York State Veterinary Medical Society, the Hudson
Valley Veterinary Medical Society, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the
Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, t he Association of Reptile and
Amphibian Veterinarians and routinely participates in the online discussion forum of
exotic veterinarians from around the world. Dr. Factor is also a member of the
Board of Directors of the Orange County Animal Emergency Service in Middletown,
NY. In his capacity on the board, he is responsible for maintaining the quality of
medical care provided to emergencies from all Veterinary practices in Orange
County and beyond.
Dr. Factor created and taught the course in Exotic Animal Medicine and Care at the
recently accredited program for Licensed Veterinary Technicians at SUNY Ulster for
three years. This course is now being taught by his associate, Dr. Melamud.
With few exceptions, Dr. Factor has owned pets of every species he treats and
has first hand experience in their husbandry and care. He has been a member of
the Association of Avian Veterinarians since its inception, and maintains his expertise
in all species, including dogs and cats by constant learning and continuing education.
His only desire is to provide your pet with the best medical and surgical care possible.


Dr. Melamud is soon to be known as Dr. Fairlie as she was just recently married.
Dr. Melamud received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2005, from St.
George’s University, School of Veterinary Medicine. She spent one year of clinical rotations at Louisiana State University, School of Veterinary Medicine, as well as a preceptorshipat the Baton Rouge Zoo and an externship at one of Long Island’s premier referral centers for birds, reptiles and other exotic pets. She is currently a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the New York State
Veterinary Medical Society, Association of Avian Veterinarians, and the Hudson Valley Veterinary Medical Society.
She also currently teaches the Exotic Animal Medicine and Care course at
SUNY Ulster.
During her veterinary training, Dr. Melamud was one of four veterinary students
selected to travel to Uganda, Africa to conduct a three-month research field study
of Echinococcus granulosis and its associated Hydatid Cyst Disease - the result of
a fatal tapeworm infestation affecting both wild animals and humans. She also
assisted Dr. Ludwig Siefert, a world-renowned wildlife veterinarian and professor
of veterinary medicine at Makerere University, in the rescue, tracking, and medical
care of wild elephants, buffalo, hyenas, lions, leopards, zebra, warthogs, mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and various ruminants.
While studying abroad, Dr. Melamud was the Animal Welfare Representative for
the Student Affiliate of the American Veterinary Medical Association for the
Grenada Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, where she helped
establish and provide veterinary services for St. George’s University students,
as well community service and a fundraising/donation program to benefit the
animals rescued by the GSPCA. She also educated Grenadians as to how to appropriately care for domestic and farm animals as pets, and helped establish
and enforce leash and animal welfare laws on the island.
